The Yorkshire Dales has something for everyone and we want to make sure everyone, regardless of ability, background or lived experience has the opportunity to come and explore our special landscapes.
Providing experiences that enable people to access the special qualities of the National Park to increase their understanding, enjoyment, health and well-being is one of the objectives agreed by the Authority and a wide range of local partner organisations in the Yorkshire Dales National Park Management Plan 2019-24 – see ‘welcoming place objectives’.
We offer supported group visits for people we know are less likely to visit the National Park independently; these are children and young people, people with disabilities and long-term health conditions, people from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic groups and Refugees (BAMER) and people experiencing social and economic disadvantage. Visits are tailored to the interests, needs and abilities of group members and the organisation they are visiting with.
For individuals from these groups, we run programmes that offer regular skills-based outdoor activities and training for community group staff and volunteers who want to bring people into the Yorkshire Dales.
We also work with partners to offer programmes that improve the health and well-being of referred participants called Green social prescribing.
Most of our supported group sessions and supported residentials are free, we loan waterproofs and we have a small transport fund to help with the costs of visits.
