Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind
Coventry
Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind provides long term, community-based support to visually impaired people and their families from across Coventry and the local area. As sight loss is usually progressive, our aim is to help people cope over the long term with the multiple, complex impacts it creates, empowering people to live positive, independent lives, the way they choose for themselves. We also aim to bring people out of often profound isolation which causes loneliness and undermines physical and mental wellbeing. It is central to our ethos that bringing visually impaired people into contact with a network of others living first hand with sight loss is one of the most positive ways to help them find ways to cope and adapt; these connections provide encouragement and lead to a more positive outlook.
The centre is run by full- and part-time staff along with two working trustees, who are supported by over 80 dedicated volunteers. The charity was proud to have been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2018.
CRCB offers a wide programme of activities ranging from developing skills for positive, independent living such as IT, smart tech, cookery and Braille, to maintaining positive health and wellbeing along with regular group activities for pleasure, fun and peer connection, such as a Monday Club, creative writing, music, craft club, allotment group, bowls and yoga. Our Centre is open 5 days a week and we provide a minibus service to enable people who are unable to travel independently to attend the centre. In addition, we provide advice on and access to specialist aids and equipment for living with sight loss. We offer individuals and their carers and families guidance and supported referrals to other specialist professionals.
