St Mary's Hospice provides free care and comfort for patients who are living with any life shortening illness or long term condition and their family: including cancers, neurological conditions, respiratory and heart disease, either at the Hospice or at home. We support people from the moment of diagnosis and their families for longer.
Our catchment area covers from Barrow-in-Furness to Millom and across to Kendal. Based in Ulverston the Hospice is ideally positioned to meet the needs of all patients and their families in our community.

This is a nine bedded unit, where we take referrals for symptom management, respite care and end of life care for patients with life shortening conditions.
Medical Out Patients
Local health professionals can request medical outpatient appointment for patients with life shortening illness who have symptom control issues
Hospice @ Home
Cares for patients with life shortening conditions who wish to remain at home at end of life. The service covers the Furness and South Lakes area seven days a week. We also have a night service, where a Health Care Assistant can stay at a patient/family home overnight to help prevent carer fatigue and hospital admission.
Family Support and Bereavement Service
Our Support Service is available to anyone over the age of 18 who is experiencing loss, irrespective of time lapsed, cause or relationship. There is also no requirement to have had previous contact with the hospice services
We understand that life-shortening illnesses affect not only the patient, but also their network of family, friends and carers. Our Family and Bereavement Support Service provides psychological, emotional and spiritual support for patients throughout their illness and for their families and carers, leading up to and following bereavement. People may need varying levels of help at any given time, and we respect this, so the support we offer is tailored to meet individual needs wherever possible. We work to support you through all the varied and often confusing feelings you may experience.
We offer a range of different support options including: 1-2-1 support, Telephone support and Online support.

Creative Therapy
Creative therapy is an ongoing programme that enables individuals to take a sense of control and boost self-esteem. The programme allows a use of a wide range of art forms, building on new skills which can be shared with family and friends, thus encouraging reconnection during what can be a very lonely time, and help make everlasting memories. Each session lasts 3 hours and runs at the Living Well Centre in Barrow. There are also drop-in sessions which run from both Barrow and the wider South Lakes community.
Mindfulness programme
A six week programme for patients, their families and care givers. Practicing Mindfulness can help control and direct our thoughts in order to reduce stress and anxiety and aid in relaxation. This in turn can lead to improved sleep, better mental health, lowering of depression, improved relationships, better digestion and pain management. The Mindfulness programme is held at both our Living Well Centre in Barrow and St. Mary's Hospice in Ulverston and is by referral only.
We accept referrals from individuals, families and carers as well as medical professionals. To refer someone, or to find out more information, please call the Living Well Centre 01229 444407.
