Kent Estuary Youth project
Westmorland and Furness
KEY was established in 2015 to provide youth services for those living in the villages around the Kent Estuary. Its aim is to help young people of secondary school age in their physical, social and emotional development. In particular, we seek to work with young people who face difficulties or challenges, and to mitigate some of the disadvantages of growing up in relatively small communities in an area where the demographic focus tends to be on older people. Our two professional, experienced youth workers put the young people at the heart of KEY’s work, listening to them and working alongside them to support them in their personal, physical, social and emotional development, and to enable them to make a positive contribution, to their local community .
KEY’S current activities are:
A weekly after-school Youth Café in Milnthorpe
A weekly evening Youth Club in Arnside
Sports/fun trips & sessions, particularly during the school holidays and summer periods.
Special engagement and activities between the young people and residents in local care homes.
Other one-off activities such as inter-generational community projects; the next is linked to Milnthorpe VE Day celebrations when the young people are to interview and record older villager's wartime experiences.
A weekly Drop-in, Alternative Curriculum Workshops and one to one sessions are held in the local comprehensive school, made possible by the support of the staff and we value the growing relationship that the trustees have with the head of the School and that our youth worker has with the School’s Pastoral Team.
Development work has commenced for:
New youth clubs/activities in Levens and Storth
A second, evening provision in Milnthorpe to meet the needs of an older group of young people.
And discussions are taking place around providing a Community Kitchen in Milnthorpe
